Trestles Prime Surfing Event 2011

Trestles, California is host to a Prime Surfing Event.  A marriage between world class surf and the capital of media.  Pristine surroundings produce a unique experience. The Prime Event at Trestles is one of a number of contests that enable top season competitors to gain access into the professional World Tour of Surfing.  The 2011 Prime Event at Trestles gave way to epic performances.

    More about Surfing
A week prior to the contest, Trestles received a 7-foot swell.  The contest window pumped out solid 3 to 4 foot+ waves.  A decent swell started with some wind chop then mixed with a new swell midway through the competition.   Clean conditions, overcast to sunny skies prevailed... ...Classic Trestles.

ASP Prime Event Tents - Trestles 2011

    More about California
Trestles is host to a Prime Surf Contest held by the Association of Surfing Professionals.   Nike is the major sponsor of the event and the official name of the event is "Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro".  ASP holds Prime and Star rated events serve as a mechanism for newer competitors to earn points toward the World Tour.  This Trestles Prime Event gives an opportunity for 96 surfers to compete.  Surfers in the Prime strive to gain entry into the World Tour.  Top season point earners can gain a slot in the World Tour for the following year (rotation could take place multiple times per year).  The World Tour of surfing consists of 32 of the world's top surfers.  This was reduced in recent years from 45 competitors on the World Tour.  Trestles has hosted iconic surfers over the years. Rippers like Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Mick Fanning, Sunny Garcia, Dane Reynolds, Christian Fletcher, and Shane Beschen have performed at this beach.  Slater actually signed his 1st sponsorship contract with Quiksilver 20 years ago at Trestles.

Kelly Slater did not compete at this year's prime event at Trestles.  Back in 2009, Slater indicated that he was pleased with ASP's decision to modify the "Priority Rule" to allow for two competitors to catch the same wave under a specific scenario. If the surfer with priority goes one direction, left or right, another competitor can go the other direction without causing an interference penalty. In 2011, jockeying and hassling prevailed though.  There were a number of interference calls issued this year.  The action culminated in the finals.  Miguel Pupo, from Brazil, went against Tanner Gudauskas from San Clemente.  Miguel was trailing in the beginning of the final heat but still sealed the deal for the contest title.  “I’m just so happy to win this event and I’m sorry that I took out the town’s local guy,” Pupo said. “I knew there was going to be a Brazilian in the Final. I was just trying to be that Brazilian and I can’t believe I won. I’m just so happy. I brought my father here and it’s the first time he’s gone to a contest with me and things just went my way.”

Surfers compete at world class breaks like Trestles.  Prime Events are an instrumental component in professional surfing.  Today's rippers continue to raise the bar with extreme performances.  The Association of Surfing Professionals and Miguel Pupo proved that point once again at The Prime Trestles Surfing Event 2011.
