The story starts off with Maroo and her
little sister Nimai eating roots. Their mother warming water over
hot stones. The girls had a brother names Otak too. The
return of hunters, leads to the women of the tribe preparing the meat.
Skinning with scrapers, and the mother passing a blood filled skull to
the hunters, give a feeling of living off the land. |

The tribe then travels to new regions for
summer hunting. The men travel lightly and the women carry much of
the goods. The men do much of the hut set up, as they travel. |

During their travels to the sea, the kids adopt a puppy. The story goes on to describe the growing relationship between the kids and the dog. The story picks up as Mother has another son during the trip. The tribe rejoices until the next hunting party gets into some trouble. |
