LAN Party |
| Video gaming systems have been around for over 30 years. In 1972 Atari released the arcade version of Pong. In 1977, the Atari 2600 was released as the first home gaming console. Then in the 90's, The LAN Party started to evolve and claim a firm foundation amongst gamers. There are some pre-requisites to participate in LAN games. There are a variety of LAN games available to those that venture into this new realm. | ||

| What is a LAN? LAN is an acronym that stands for Local Area Network. In this case digital devices are networked together. These devices include computers, video game consoles such as Xbox and PS2, and hand held game units like the portable Sony PSP. The primary component that enables these separate devices to communicate is called a router. Routers are devices that have multiple connection ports and act as a central intelligent hub for data and signals to travel through. Routers can be connected using a wired or a wireless method. These days the most common cables used are called CAT5 or Category 5 that include an RJ45 connector. This cable physically connects the computers or gaming consoles to the Router. The wireless technology which is commonly used is called Wi-Fi, and you may also hear about Blue Tooth as well. If I have lost you at this point, then you are probably still among the masses. These items are readily available and are also getting closer to "Plug and Play". At this time, I would still recommend that you enlist a certified technician or a knowledgeable geek to configure your LAN. | ||
| A variety of games can be played on a LAN. The categories include Sports, Racing, Tactical, Shooting, and Fantasy games. Some of the titles include Quake4, Half Life2, Forza, and Fifa2006. How much do the games cost? Well typically the multi-player games range from $30.00 to $60.00. Also there is a Video Game Rating System that marks the outside of retail packed games. This rating system helps you learn a bit about the types of scenarios included in the game, as well as suggests what audience the game is best suited for. | ||

| The people that participate in LAN Parties typically range from about 9yrs of age to 45+. Gamers are both male and female. In addition, gamers also tend to use nicknames and handles to identify themselves in the virtual world. LAN parties have also facilitated stronger social interaction between computer users. These days there are less single player games and more multiple player gaming experiences. | ||
| Where are LAN parties held? That is a good question. If you do not have a LAN, you can go online to connect to other remote networks and websites that host these games. There are also internet cafe's that enable gamers to meet in person and play on an existing local area network. This last weekend Atlantic Inc hosted a LAN party and Tournament to introduce their new line of gaming accessories to Gamers. The LAN party setting included a variety of technological touches. A large room with a high ceiling included rows and rows of computer tables. These tables were lined with side-by-side computer workstations. The variety of gaming computer systems was awesome. One of the walls was lit up with a live 25 foot projected image of a tournament "In Play". The perspective was given through the eyes of competitors, randomly. Another wall had a large white board that kept the progression of the teams in the tournament and various statistical data related to the performance. The gamers came equipped with gadgets of all sorts. Two of the walls were lined with Atlantic's new furniture and accessory products specifically designed with gamers in mind. Each product included a video game system and TV screen hooked up and ready to be played. Some of the gaming consoles included the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Xbox, Xbox360, Game Cube, and the PS2. Games like Missile Command on Atari and Golf on the Game Cube were also being played throughout the event. | ||
