Educational Field Trip February 2005

Our virtual bus takes us to www.Discovery.com . From their "News" link we find news about the International Space Station. The hopes are to be able to host shuttle crews for extended periods of time ( Up to 33 days) at the space station. The space station is planning to host Collins and six other crew mates for 8 days in mid-May 2005.

Over at Nasa, they are planning to send another space craft to Mars in 2005, per their home page.  Their home page utilizes both flash and video formats to enhance your experience.

On the next leg of our virtual field trip, we visited Child Development Institute.  Understanding child development was at the top of the list of links at the Child Development Institute. We moved through this section to reach the Language section. We have learned that there are some typical stages of language development through childhood. These stages are commonly experienced from 6 months to 8 years of age.
During the 1st 6months an infant can distinguish and respond to friendly and angry tones. When a
child reaches 1Year through 18 months they begin to Understand simple instructions, especially if vocal or physical cues are given. During this same time a child's vocabulary may contain 5-20 words that are typically nouns. From 2-4 years of age, children exhibit more dynamics with language.  for example short sentence-largely noun-verb combinations, and have a vocabulary of 150-1000 words, Knows one or more colors, and can Understand such concepts as longer, larger, when a contrast is presented. Once a child reaches 5years to 6 years of age the language skills have grown. At this point children can count to ten, are able to follow three commands given
without interruptions, and know their age.

It doesn't stop there. 5 to 6 year olds can usually grasp simple time concepts: morning, afternoon, night, day, later, after, while, tomorrow, yesterday, and today. By the time a child is seven to eight years old they can produce complex and compound sentences, reading with considerable ease and now writing simple compositions, can follow directions with little repetition, and tend to Have
well developed time and number concepts.

Dropping in for a brief visit at the California Library we found some information about a new California quarter. California has three quarter elements/styles: John Muir, Yosemite National Park, and the California Condor. The production of this monetary unit was limited to 75,000. Quarter specs: Standard Weight = 5.670g, Standard Diameter = 0.955 in., Thickness = 1.75 mm, Edge = Reeded, Composition = Cupro-Nickel Clad (8.33% Nickel, Balance Cu).
