Direction of the Computer Industry August 2007

Around the world, new technology grows and expands into a daily part of our lives.  The Internet and communication are two essential aspects of our lives today.  Technological advancements by companies such as Seagate, Cisco, and Sun, strive to meet a demand for new ideas and related digital solutions. As more technology is manufactured, a steady demand to repair or replace parts on existing computer products exists.
    More about Communication
Earlier this year Seagate, a popular digital storage company, devoted the top of their home page to the "Free Agent" product line. In late August 2007, Seagate continues to convey the message using the same image/banner.  One of Seagate's home page articles was titled "How Gamers Can Upgrade Their PS3 Drives".  The Sony PS3 gaming console features a Seagate LD25 series hard drive. The article describes a 10 minute process to transfer existing game data into a larger hard drive, ultimately enabling gamers to add video, music, photos to the same console.  Much of the content on their site is Terabyte-oriented.  A Terabyte is a term used to measure digital storage capacity.  One Terabyte equals 1,000 Gigabytes.  Seagate has created a whole new family of terabyte-sized solutions.  The Barracuda Desktop family of hard drives has reached the terabyte benchmark with the 7200.11 series. In a recent podcast on podtech.net, Seagate's Marc Jourlait (VP of Global Marketing) was pointing out that this new family of drives actually cuts down the "Watts per Gigabyte" ratio in half. This means that it takes less power and less cooling to store the same amount of data.

This spring, Cisco was promoting the Human Network, a forum that showed other people's testimonials about new Cisco solutions.  This summer, Cisco is advertising their Human Network and their new Interaction Network using a rotating banner.  The Interaction Network is a new part of Cisco where you can seek advice about business challenges etc.  The resource is broken down into 3 categories:  Business, Technology, and Industries.  The available resources within the Interaction Network are geared to organizations with existing and somewhat sophisticated networks.  Cisco provides advice, via online video, on "how to give your road warriors (remote and traveling employees) wireless connectivity from anywhere without compromising network security or losing control".   In addition to quality content, a new message was conveyed "Work Green" to suggest WebEx services.  WebEx enables companies to have shared online conferences that include web, audio, and more.  This program is meant to enhance the characteristics of your company during sales and team activities.  Anyone in the world connected to you with this program can see anything happening on your desktop.  This can come in handy for meetings, where some people are not available to attend. Under Cisco's Latest News section of their home page, 29 Aug 2007, was an article titled "A Unified and Collaborative Future".  This article is about Cisco and IBM joining forces to meet the business demand for integrated communications and collaborative workspace.  The article kicks off stating "Cisco and IBM have a long relationship created out of network synergy and built on collaboration".  Bruce Morse, Vice President of Unified Communication and Collaboration software at the IBM Software Group later added that unified collaborative communication and workspace is in demand: "Although Cisco is a company that started in the networking business, they quickly understood that business solutions are a key part of the overall success".  Bruce goes on to state "There's a, lot of people entering the workforce that grew up on the web using real-time collaboration tools like chat and video and social software like Wiki's and blogs".

Sun Microsystems previously featured an event called CommunityOne.  This event showed people to explore the open source possibilities.  In Late August 2007, the company has now dedicated 1/2 their page to a banner that read "Go Green, Save Green" hardware campaign. The banner, a picture of a close up o a newly sprouted plant being held by a pair of hands, is vivid with the color green.  Sun Microsystems claims their new Sun Fire Servers are "The world's first eco-responsible server: Triple the throughput, half the power, half the size".  In addition Sun is currently offering a Trade-In Program. This program allows someone to obtain credit on purchase of a new product in exchange for the customer's existing computer.  Many computer companies offer these types of programs.  It keeps the older computers out of landfills/dumps and provides parts that can be used in supporting older hardware failures. What's left of the circuit board is shredded and processed to extract the precious metals.  Such metals include: gold, platinum, palladium, copper and silver. Sun will accept computers manufactured by the following companies: Sun, Dell, IBM, or HP systems.

Similar programs have been around and have been used by companies like IBM, Sony, Compaq, HP, and National Service Solutions, since the late 1980's and the early 1990's. This and other factors contribute to the existence of a rather lucrative secondary hardware market.  Secondary computer hardware and 3rd party maintenance companies have in turn helped to spawn a new sector of the computer industry known as the Online Computer Resellers.  Many Online Computer Resellers, Like Tamaya Tech, sell new hardware and will also offer refurbished computer parts and repair services.

Servers, Storage Devices, and Network Communication are an integral part of modern day society.   Industry leaders continue to develop technology with improved performance and features.  Generations of computer systems are available.  Parts and repair options are available for older computers as well.  New technology provides new solutions for the work place and streamlines our lifestyles.
