Concrete

Concrete was a very important invention. The Romans first invented it in 300 BC. As a result, the invention of concrete reinforced our sidewalks and roads. It also helped build some of the most amazing buildings and stadiums. Many countries have caught onto the use of concrete.

More about Rome
The influence of concrete was started in Egypt in about 3000 BC. The people started by mixing mud with straw to make bricks. Due to this influence, the idea was improved by the Romans in about 300 BC, using Limestone material, water, and volcanic ash. This technique was used for nearly two millennia before a man named Joseph Aspdin created a new type of concrete in 1824 called Portland Concrete. He used a mix of clay and limestone that was crushed and fired in a kiln. This became a huge success.

The invention of concrete improved the Romans lives. The Romans had a rocky and mountainous terrain, which made it difficult for transportation, both foot and chariot, and communicating with each other in case of invasion. With the use of concrete, the sidewalks were easier to walk on. Therefore, people could easily travel and communicate quicker and easier in case of attack. The roads were also smoother, so chariots could drive swiftly.

More about Transportation
Concrete also helped make some of our most wonderful buildings. It was much easier to build with concrete since it was so lightweight. Consequently, the Romans were able to make both public places and houses. Some of the public architecture includes stadiums and bridges. Romans are also known for building  aqueducts. Some of the famous places that were built include the Roman Coliseum in the middle of present day Rome. This structure has been supported by concrete since AD 80. By using concrete, the Romans could improve the Roman arch style.

Concrete still supports us today. We use concrete for the same reasons the Romans did. We use it for making sidewalks, piers, and creating and constructing tall buildings, some world famous. It is also used for developing roads for cars and trucks. Concrete is a universal need to our lives.
