Western Digital (WD)
is a major hard drive manufacturer Headquartered in
Lake Forest, California. WD has been in business
since 1970 and began designing and manufacturing hard drives in 1988.
WD has Design and Manufacturing facilities in California and
Thailand.
WD also has additional Manufacturing facilities in Malaysia. Over
the years Western Digital has played a significant role in data storage. One of Western Digital's long time competitors is Seagate.
Seagate's roots stem back to 1979. Seagate had a big success in
1980 with a hard drive that could fit into a 5.25 form factor slot of
desktop computers. Western Digital has mass produced
hard drives over the years and plans to continue. At the same time,
WD is taking steps to align itself with the global community. Via thier corporate website, Western Digital clearly defines target markets. According to WD, Desktop computing is the largest market for hard drives. In 2007, Desktop Computing was anticipated to account for 230 million units, worth $13 billion. The Notebook Computer Market required approximately 107 million hard drives in a year, worth about $8 billion. And Consumer Electronics, the newest market for hard drives, consumed approximately 81 million units and was worth more than $6 billion. To answer the call for storage, Western Digital stepped up with three distinct product lines. The popular WD Caviar® hard drive line caters to the Desktop computer market. These 7,200 RPM drives are available in both EIDE and Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces. Yielding top performance and capacity, these units ensure cool and quiet operation for PC and Macintosh® computers alike. In order to meet Enterprise-level requirements and appease gaming enthusiasts, WD manufactures a 10,000RPM SATA drive known as Raptor series. This line also incorporates an "RE" version of the line that runs at 7200RPM. The raptor series products commonly support high-end RAID configurations, medical imaging, and even video broadcast applications. WD addresses the portable computing demand with Scorpio® hard drive line. The 5400RPM Scorpio® boasts lightning fast performance without requiring excessive power. This line is designed to help extend notebook battery life and provide a reliable data source. Western Digital announces that they are playing a role in the global community. WD has published Greenhouse Gas Report and promise to improve efficiencies related to the environment. There are several layers to WD's strategy: |

| In May 2008, Sony
displayed a prominent banner of a half open laptop and a message that
read "Create your own mobile masterpiece". The VAIO TZ series
notebook is a "configure to order" product. This line is
complimented with an impressive online 3D product tour. The
marketing message is directed at a generation familiar with a digitally
mobile lifestyle. Clicking through to the TZ product page, a new
banner picks up on the previous message. The new banner image of 5
laptops (with various color schemes), describes the product line as a thin, light road warrior. Sony also uses two additional bold words
to describe the product line: "Ultraportable and uncompromised".
These messages, backed by product specifications that include perks like
carbon fiber casing appeal to consumers that have had experiences
with portable products. Sony is tapping into a sore spot for
mobile users. On May 19th, 2008, Sony announced that they had achieved the World's Highest Level OF Luminous Efficiency For Blue Fluorescent. Sony partnered with Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. back in 2005. The purpose of the arrangement was to develop and advance OLED technology and related materials. Previous Fluorescent OLED devices were limited to a maximum internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 25%. The combination of new carrier transport materials and optimized device structure has led to the achievement of 28.5% IQE. What does this mean for computer users? This new technology will directly impact the world in three ways: 1) Enabling blue color deepness exceeding current standards, 2) Significantly reducing power consumption and increasing battery life, as blue is the most energy-intensive of the three primary RGB colors. 3) Ultimately clearing the path to products that will be less taxing on the environment. In addition to Sony's key role in the computer industry, entertainment is at the heart of the organization. Sony, in large part, is responsible for integrating technology with lifestyle. Sony has long had a foot hold in the production of movies, music, and gaming. As a direct reflection, Sony has been sure to devote a significant amount of thier home page to images and links to thier list of current entertainment releases. Among the list were titles and artists such as: "You Don't Mess with the Zohan", "Made Of Honor", "Usher", "Donna Summer", "QUAKE wars", "Iron Man", and "Haze". |

Lenovo's home page message tells visitors to "Pack Light" for the upcoming Memorial Holiday. Referring to the Thinkpad notebook, Lenovo follows up by stating that "Thinkpad notebooks have the power and portability you need". Lenovo, like Sony, also refers to mobile users as "Road Warriors" throughout their site. With notebook computers getting a fair share of the marketing budgets from major manufacturers, other complimentary businesses are being affected. Brad Hess of DigitalTechland.com, an e-commerce company, told Trade Federation Inc. "Due to the increase in laptop popularity, battery sales are booming". | |||
| Lenovo has dedicated some of its web resources to recycling. Lenovo provides a directory resource, searchable by global location. The resource also provides local and national regulation guidelines based on your search location. Lenovo is finding ways of contributing green information to the global community. | ||||
| Lenovo is also an official sponsor for the 2008 Olympics and Olympic athletes from around the world. Lenovo's Olympic involvement does not stop there. Lenovo also played a significant role in the design of the 2008 Olympic Torch. The final product was a vibrant red and metallic torch with an intricate swirl design that resembled a traditional Chinese scroll. Dubbed the "Cloud of Promise", the torch design was inspired by one of China's greatest contributions to the world, paper. This is a powerful symbol to the Chinese people, as it represents a traditional pass down of writings, images, and culture from one generation to the next. The torch was designed by 10 members of Lenovo, over 10 months, using the same design process used to engineer Lenovo PCs. Lenovo did not miss the opportunity to parlay this unique opportunity. Lenovo created custom versions of the 3000 V200 notebook. These notebooks share the torch design that includes a red case with a silver swirl design. Lenovo created 33 notebooks that will be auctioned around the world. The proceeds will go to the Lenovo Hope Fund. The goal of the fund is to support the creation of new businesses in distressed communities around the world. | ||||
