Computer Industry News August 2008

Around the world, new technology is playing a larger role in file archiving and information referencing.   Businesses create, store, and share their digital content and data more than ever.  Companies such as Western Digital, Sony, and Lenovo continue to provide solutions through their products for commerce.  These Major Computer Manufacturers are making a creative and effective use of their website tools to communicate general information, as well as, specific messages.

Western Digital (WD) is a major hard drive manufacturer Headquartered in Southern California.  WD has been in business since 1970 and began designing and manufacturing hard drives in 1988.  Over the years, Western Digital has played a significant role in data storage, backup, and even has Surveillance  Technology.

Western Digital's home page recently focused on the "MY Book Mirror Edition" solution.  This dual drive external storage solution stood next to large bold font text that read "The safest place for your data".  WD attempts to raise awareness about data and its value.

Directly under the MY Book banner was an eye catching image of a person pulling thier "hoodie" down over there head (with force).  The frustrated person is positioned next to a question asking "What is your backup plan?".  Clicking through to the landing page, the same person is next to a list of files GONE.  A nearly finished screenplay, database of contacts, pics of an epic snowboard trip, and 3,782 tracks of favorite music.  Western Digital hits home with our digital information and the possible pain associated with such a  loss. On the bright side, WD completes the page with some useful tips that you can use to protect your memories and important files.  The first recommendation directs you to get organized.  Visual examples of folder structure help to explain.  In addition, being selective with your backups can save time and allow a focus on only the important files.  From there, safe computer users would backup regularly using backup software.  Western Digital did make a point to persuade visitors to avoid backing up to CD or DVD, as their lifespan could be as little as two years.

Western Digital has also made headway into the Video Surveillance arena.  The CE series hard drives have been specially designed to work with Video Recorders typically found in offices and small businesses.  Some of these hard drives can provide up to 120 hours of HD video

In late July 2008, the Sony website addressed the needs of businesses, and educational institutions.  Sony.com also gives to the greater web community in the form of instructional resources for the digital novice.

Sony combines a comprehensive set of products aimed at businesses requirements.  The business information is consolidated into a dedicated section of their site. There were products that you would expect to see such as notebooks, desktops, displays, and storage. Sony helps to take business out of the box. Looking at business needs being diverse, Sony  mixed in business class projectors, digital imaging, voice recorders, speakers, and blu-ray players to the business line up.

Sony has an attractive line-up of Security Surveillance products too.  This line-up includes IP Cameras, CCTVs, LCDs, Recorders, and Security System Software.  Being a movie-oriented company, Sony would seem to have a snug fit into the world of Video Surveillance.  Security devices have become more affordable over the years.  In some cases someone can actually save money, over time, through lower insurance costs.  According to a Sony online video, a school district in the El Cajon / San Diego California area did just that.  The district also claims success in providing increased safety for students and learning.  The video system spans over 12 schools and can even link directly to law enforcement authorities.

Sony's role in personal computing and entertainment stretches beyond manufacturing electronics.  Sony is currently hosting and contributing quality digital content for citizens of the world wide web.  Sony calls this educational offering 101 Online Learning. There are complimentary instructional articles and digital resources in four different categories: Personal Computing, Home Entertainment, Digital Photography and Digital Video.

      . More about Hard Drives
Lenovo's updated home page message tells web visitors to "Beat The Heat this summer". This message follows up last month's message "Escape from the office this summer".  The Lenovo Summer Theme unfolds.  Their follow up tag line explains that these new Thinkpad notebooks were engineered for cool and quiet performance.  The banner image incorporates a "close up" of a Thinkpad notebook T series and an X series tablet.  One of the primary features that helps to back the claim of having a cooler and quieter notebook is the integration of a Solid State Storage Drive.  Solid State Drives do not have moving parts.  Moving parts in traditional hard drives were prone to make noise and produce heat related to motion.  This notebook is also not required to utilize its energy to spin the disk associated with hard drives.  There is a fairly new feature, worth mentioning, that illuminates the keyword in dark places.  This new feature is called the "ThinkLight".  This small light is LED based and thus keeps power consumption to a minimum.

Lenovo has made efforts to build an image of quality and overall assurance for consumers.  From a website standpoint, Lenovo has designated a portion of their home page (approximately 1/10) to Support. In some cases, such as the "Safe Computing" link, Lenovo presents resources that could help Lenovo product owners and the general web community.  One such resource titled "How to avoid the inadvertent loss or corruption of data" recommends four (4) specific approaches:  (1) Back up data regularly to CD, Network attachable storage, and also a remote server or off-site location.  (2) Use dependable, current virus detection software.  (3) Use of file level passwords as Security Mechanisms to control data access.  (4) Use file comparison functions or software to confirm that important data has been transferred completely and accurately.

As a manufacturer, Lenovo has identified that computer users have diverse needs.  With a wide variety of lifestyles, professions, and application options in the 21st century there are a multitude of digital accessories available.  Lenovo has partnered up with other manufacturers, and in some instances re-branded products,  to offer a complete line of accessories on thier website and through computer resellers.  Within the accessories product group there are power adapters, UPS, extra batteries, cameras, solid state drives, routers, projectors, and more.
