Seagate continued
to re-organize
with a trending emphasis on their sales strategy in late 2009.
Seagate's last fiscal year ended July 3, 2009 (*2010 current fiscal
year is almost complete). In 2009 Seagate reported a net loss of approximately ($3086) million.
Seagate also reported a diluted loss of ($6.32) per share in 2009.
Seagate had to downsize by laying off workers and restructuring the
organization during the 2008 and 2009 fiscal years. Seagate announced financial optimism for the 2010 Fiscal year totals. With dismal financial news in 2009, strategies have had a chance to play out for Seagate. In a 2009 article, written by Trade Federation Inc., it was suggested that Seagate could rebound in 2010. Heading into June of 2010, the stock market activity seems to support that optimism.

2009 proved to be a
year of transformation for Western Digital
(WD). WD, like Seagate, delivered some financial news. WD invested in innovation while
shedding assets that may not fit into the company's forward vision.
Fast forward, 2010 looks to be sizing up for Western Digital. 2009 turned out to be worse than 2008 for Western Digital financially. The 2009 financials did include an acquisition that marked the entrance of Western Digital into the Solid Sate Drive (SSD) market. Western Digital, like Seagate, also needed to realign cost structures. In 2009, Western Digital sold their media substrate manufacturing facility in Sarawak, Malaysia. The 3rd Quarter revenue of 2010, reported by WD on 4/22/2010, is up by 66% compared to the revenue in the 3rd Quarter of 2009. Based on sales of hard drive units only (excluding SSD, WD TV Media Player, and media/substrates sales), Western Digital has increased revenue and margin over the third quarter in 2009. WD reported that almost half (49%) of the total revenue for Q3 in 2010 was generated via OEM channel sales. The percentage of revenue coming from North America, South America, and Europe dropped slightly in Q3 of 2010. Just over half (52%) of the total revenue generated by Western Digital, in Q3 of 2010, came from Asia. In August 2009, Western Digital again devoted the initial home page banner to Scorpio Blue. In May of 2010 the Scorpio Blue product family slipped to the 3rd banner in the home page rotation. The initial banner slot is currently being taken by an advertisement featuring an iPhone / iPod touch Photo Viewer App that works with My Book external Home Network hard drives. |

As far as whole
computer systems and
digital solutions go, Dell Inc. is still on the scene. At the same time,
Dell has been giving mixed signals to investors. Dell continues to
think outside the box or at least about the box. In terms of sales focus, Dell has put mobility
at the top of their list. On the 12-month graph, stock prices at Dell look like a roller coaster ride. The prices have been trending upward overall, yet would appear as steady or predictable as stock prices over at Seagate. Investors might be stoked by the wide range of business, government, and community partnerships and involvement. Equally as important are the timely and professional press releases published on the company's website. | Innovation is still at work over at Dell.
Back in December of 2008, Dell pledged to revolutionize packaging.
This pledge came out of the need to save money and global pressure to
make environmentally friendly business decisions. In 2010, Dell is now making some of their packaging from mechanically pulped bamboo.
The bamboo comes from a Forest Stewardship Council-certified bamboo
forest in China. The packaging will compost and biodegrade in an active
compost pile. There are several benefits specifically associated
with bamboo. Bamboo is among the fastest growing woody plants,
bamboo’s tensile strength is similar to that of steel, bamboo promotes
healthy soil, and it does not require replanting if harvested correctly. In May of 2010, Dell placed mobile products in the first 3 slots of their home page banner rotation. The number one slot featured laptops. With the 2010 Summer season about to heat up, Dell might be able to capitalize and gain market share. Dell stands to add significant revenue, in the coming years, out of personal vacations and from businesses. Laptop users every where are all familiar with battery life issues. The advancements of Batteries has lagged behind the capabilities of other technology around us. Dell offers extra batteries to customers. In addition, some laptops are capable of using a primary and secondary battery. The secondary battery is also known as a battery slice. |
