Since the American Automobile Association (AAA) began sanctioning of auto races in 1909, the sport has taken off.  After a major accident upset the racing scene,  a new organization took the reigns.  The United States Automobile Club (USAC) began sanctioning events in 1956 and lasted until 1979 when a new racing organization formed.  In 1979 Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) began its own competition series which ended up dominating the racing circuit.  Following the loss of sponsorships and general financial troubles the organization re-branded itself in 2003.  The organization is currently known as the Champ Car World Series.

Technology definitely plays a big role in racing.  In the summer of 2006, a new car was unveiled for the upcoming season.  In 2007, drivers competed using Bridgestone tires, Cosworth turbo-charged engines and DP01 Chassis.  The Cosworth engine has enjoyed an exclusive arrangement with Champ Car for a number of years.  Through technology advancements, the Cosworth engine life has increased from 1,200 miles to 1,400 miles.  The Panoz also has an exclusive agreement and is supplying the DP01 Chassis.  These cars can go in excess of 200 miles per hour.

Portland also provided a historic footnote as a Formula One-style standing start was employed for the first time ever.  Champ Car racing returned to the picturesque Mont-Tremblant circuit in Quebec for the first time since 1968. The race was the first of three straight in Canada and with it came the first-ever Canadian Triple Crown, to be awarded to the team that amassed the best cumulative average for the three races. The Champ Car World Series paid its first visit to Europe since 2003 with a pair of new venues: Zolder, Belgium, former site of the Belgian F1 Grand Prix, and Assen, Holland, home of the famous TT course.
