The Cherokee

The Cherokee people built shelters. This house was called an asi. They would build houses or shelters for the winter and for summer. In the winter, they built small round houses that looked like an upside down basket. They used this house, because it was low to the ground and it would keep all the heat inside. They made their houses wattle and daub. Wattle is a combination of twigs, branches, and stalks which are woven together. Daub is a sticky substance, which can include mud and clay. On the houses, they would cover wattle over daub.

In the summer, the men would build a longhouse. This house was used, because it allowed cool air to pass in on those hot days. They get the wood from the trees. They would gather up wood, and just like bricks, use mud or clay to fasten the logs together, to make them firm. Sometimes the Cherokee would build a fence around their home to keep away enemies. They were made of wood from the trees.

However many were in the clan would be separated by house. They had approximately two hundred large villages. Each village had thirty to sixty homes in it. In the center of a village was a seven- sided council house. Here they would hold meetings and ceremonies. Shelter was something that kept the Cherokees alive.

The Cherokee had many tools and weapons to use in their daily lives. They used weapons for hunting. Tools were used in many different ways. They also had utensils for eating and mixing.

The weapons they used were knives, blowguns, spears, traps, hatchets, and bows and arrows. Blowguns are used for hunting small animals. A blowgun was a long tube, where you would blow and a dart would shoot out. Spears and traps were also used for hunting. Spears are long poles with a sharp point made of an arrowhead. Traps were in the shape of a box, made of wood. They would attach bait to a string. When the creature comes, and grabs the bait, it triggers a trap door that shuts on them. These people made different sized boxes, depending on the size of the animal they wished to capture.

The people also made utensils. Tomahawks were useful for chopping down trees or cutting wood. They would make pottery with clay, for holding water. They made baskets by weaving grasses together. These were used for gathering nuts and fruits. Nets were used for catching fish. They made dugout canoes for transportation. To push themselves along the river, they cut very large poles to push on the bottom of the river. Cherokees made spoons and bowls from wood. They would use a mortar and pestle to grind corn. They used stone for knives. Cooking pots were made of clay and all the patterns were made from wood. All of these tools and weapons are useful to the daily life to the daily life of the Cherokee people.
