May 27th, 2005 - U.S. gasoline
prices fell for the sixth week in a row, but drivers will still pay
the highest pump costs on record heading into any Memorial Day
holiday weekend, the government said Monday. The national price for
regular unleaded gasoline declined 3.8 cents over the past week to
$2.13 a gallon, up 6 cents from a year ago, according to a weekly
survey of service stations by the U.S. Energy Information
Administration.
While pump prices are at a record for the holiday, high fuel
costs are not cutting into vacation plans. The AAA motorists club
said it expects a record 31.1 million Americans will travel by car
50 miles or more from home this holiday weekend -- the traditional
start of the busy summer vacation season -- up 2.2 percent from
last year.

February but up 40 cents from last year, the EIA said. Truckers on

cents from last week. The Midwest states had the cheapest diesel at

The recent relief at the pump
was credited to several factors, including an increased supply of
crude oil and gasoline and the completion of some maintenance
projects that had reduced capacity at the nation's refineries.
Those factors had offset a spike in consumption that usually occurs
in spring and summer. |

In other gas related news, a
new web site designed to help U.S. drivers find the cheapest
gasoline prices was overwhelmed by visitors Thursday, forcing a
temporary shut down. The debut of travel club AAA's Fuel Price
Finder web site drew so many hits from members in pursuit of
locating gasoline stations in their areas with the cheapest prices
that the site was overwhelmed and had to be shut down for
reprogramming, the AAA said. |
