Why open wheel racing you
might ask? Other than being the fastest on an oval or road course,
or even on a drag strip, the challenge and the danger of rubber
against rubber - or rubber against an immovable wall, builds up
the excitement of the race. Where the rubber meets the road, the
car exhibits record speeds, but when rubber meets rubber spinning
at a different speed, the car becomes airborne, an unguided missile
landing who-knows-where. |

The skill of the driver, or
perhaps we should say pilot, is best exhibited where this challenge
exists. Whether he is traveling at 230 MPH around an oval or 50 MPH
around a hairpin curve, split second decisions made by the driver
guiding each car safely among the others directs him toward the
checkered flag. This leaves no room for 2nd guessing. No “what-
ifs”. |

This modern carbon-fiber
composite car built very light yet extremely strong represents the
ultimate in automotive engineering, and what to expect in street
cars in the future. Racing has always been a proving ground for new
innovations, mechanical as well as safety, and each year brings new
concepts to the public. Getting more power out of a “conventional”
engine block also shows the way to high efficient engines for our
freeway navigation. |

These pictures then represent
not only the color of the venue but also the boldness of
innovation. Each time we hop into our car we should thank these
drivers and these owners for what they invent and give to the
driving public, not only the excitement of high speed racing but
also the comfort and safety of our modern every-day automobile. |
