Seagate
heads into June 2009 with plans in place to address a
shrinking demand
for products.
Seagate's plan includes cutting overhead and continuing to
promote new
product lines. Technology might be getting easier to
use.
Seagate, like many other manufacturers of consumer goods,
is
experiencing a shrinking demand for digital storage.
In order to
create positive cash flow, positive earnings, and position
the company
for a new digital landscape by the end of the year, Seagate
announced
that they will lay off approximately 1,100 employees and
begin to
restructure the organization. These changes are
expected to be
complete by the end of July or early August 2009.
New product lines geared to home and small office users
have been
the focus of Seagate over the past couple of months.
Storage
product requirements have gone beyond a user's primary
workstation hard
drive. From personal image files to important work
documents,
people are starting to understand that drive failure can
mean loss.
For many that already understood the importance of backup,
the process
may have been too cumbersome to undergo on a consistent
basis.
The Solution? Perhaps Seagate's
Replica product
line. These devices are made to automatically
and continuously store
up-to-date copies of everything on a PC, including
installed
applications, operating system, e-mail, pictures, music,
movies,
Internet bookmarks and settings. Terry
Cunningham, Senior Vice
President, Seagate Branded Solutions said “Our goal is to
deliver
solutions that provide thorough backup protection yet are
easy to use,
time-efficient and simple to understand, and the Seagate
Replica is
about as easy as it gets.”.

At the end
of May 2009, Western Digital
(WD) announced that they are going to sell an
asset in order to realign cost structures. Of course,
continued
sales is what will ultimately drive the WD forward.
The Western Digital announcement related to the sale of its
media
substrate manufacturing facility in Sarawak, Malaysia, to a
subsidiary
of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies came on May 20th,
2009.
John Coyne, President and Chief Executive Officer of
WD said "WD worked
closely with Hitachi GST, the government of Sarawak and its
local agencies to create a solution that preserves operations at
the Kuching
location, as well as the jobs of the employees and those in
supporting
industries, which have a large impact on the local
community."
The Western Digital My Book series has been one of
the company's
long-standing product lines. My Book is aimed at
offering back up
and sharing capabilities. My Book offers automated
backups and
remote access via Gigabit Ethernet technology. In June
2009, Western
Digital devoted their large home page banner to highlight
their audio
visual solution: AV-GP. The AV-
GP series was designed to be cool,
quiet, and reliable. WD currently offers this drive
in a 2TB
version that can hold approximately 240 hours of HD
video. |

Like Seagate and Western Digital, Sun
MicroSystems has
also been dealing with change.
Most of the change revolves more and more around business
and less
around
the virtual global community. By the end of May 2009,
Sun had
issued a couple of press releases highlighting business-
class storage
solutions.
Sun Microsystems avoided a sudden death earlier this year.
Not prepared for a
severe economic downturn, Sun seemed to concede failure. Sun
has claimed
to be guided by a singular vision -- "The Network is the
Computer". Sun's
network ended up saving them. Oracle swooped in
and saved Sun via acquisition. By June 2009, you are hearing
less
about Sun and financial distress. The outlook for Stock
holders and owners
of Sun products is much better. Recent Sun web space has been
dominated by
Oracle merger and product content and a little less about global
community involvement
that we are used to getting from Sun. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Oracle's
business-centric
mindset plus Sun's recent financial challenges could
cause the company
to concentrate on successful profit centers in the time
to come. Sun
is currently highlighting tape storage solutions for
businesses.
Storage products would be a strategic place to excel and
a natural
compliment to Oracle customers that need to store data.

Entry-Level
hardware is a key
focal point for Sun. The Sun Storage
7310 is aimed at companies
experiencing rapid data growth. The 7310 is part of
the Sun
Unified Storage Family and is Scalable up from 12TB to
96TB. In a
related press release issued by Sun, this product is
recommended for use
with Oracle Databases amongst other mission-critical needs.

Combining Business
and Tape
Storage Technology, Sun is forging new relationships.
Sun has
selected Fujifilm as the media development partner on its
next
generation Sun StorageTekT10000 tape
drive. "Sun's decision to
work with Fujifilm underscores the commitment both
companies have to
tape research and development," said Norio
Shibata, General
Manager, Recording Media Products Division, FUJIFILM
Corporation. |

Change in
the industry is
more apparent than ever. Partnerships, asset
redistribution, and
innovation continue to mold the Computer Storage
Industry. Seagate
is appealing to those that want to easily insure their
digital
information.
Western Digital is reinforcing remote backup options and
the close
relationship that audio and video have to your hard drive.
Sun continues to support the needs of businesses and
their data. All three
manufacturers are adapting to the new landscape of
the Digital Era. |
