Western Digital (WD)
is a major hard drive manufacturer Headquartered in
Lake Forest,
California. WD has been in business
since 1970 and began designing and manufacturing
hard drives in
1988. Over the years, Western Digital has played a
significant role
in data storage.
In order to meet Enterprise-level requirements and appease
gaming
enthusiasts, WD manufactures a 10,000RPM SATA drive known
as Raptor
series. The raptor series products commonly
support high-end
RAID configurations, medical imaging, and even video
security
applications. This line also incorporates an
"RE" version
of the line that runs at 7200RPM. On June 19th,
Western Digital
announced that it is now shipping the RE3 Family of drives to address
the growing complexity and demand by data centers. The RE3
family of drives boasts 1.2 million hours
Mean time between failures (MTBF). This acronym is
typically
used to describe the length of a products "Useful
Life". IT professionals working in Data centers prefer
drives with a high level of reliability
and life expectancy.
RE3 SATA hard drives incorporate cutting edge technology
that qualifies the product as an enterprise level solution.
The performance has improved due to dual processors being
on board.
This series includes a new rugged-ability from a Multi-axis
shock sensor
and NoTouch ramp load technology.
NoTouch technology
allows the head to record data without ever touching the
disk media inside
the hard drive.
Western Digital announced that they are playing a role
in the global community.
WD has a multi-pronged strategy that will help the
organization avoid
environmentally unfriendly activities. In addition, WD’s
new GreenPower Initiative promotes efficient
devices that could save consumers money by cutting energy costs for
those who upgrade.

In June 2008, Sony
displayed a prominent banner (2/3 of the total page size)
of two open laptops and a message that
read "Welcome to the World of Sony". The
VAIO
series
notebooks were described as "Portable, powerful and
colorful". The
appealing color options in the CR Series were said to
reflect your
individuality. There were two other banners on the
home page
rotation. One focused on digital cameras,
encouraging
visitors to "Move away from the
viewfinder". The other banner
featured the PS3 and the Metal
Gear Solid 4
video game.
Being an entertainment-oriented company, Sony has been
heavily promoting
thier Blu-ray technology. Blu-ray has become the
newest data
standard in home entertainment and movies. Blu-ray
drives and
media are used in computers, home movie players, and
even gaming
consoles like the PlayStation 3. Blu-ray has
definitely been the buzz.
Mike Brewster from Eagle Eye
Technologies told Trade Federation "Ever since we added Blu-ray products to our
website, traffic has increased".
In addition to Sony's role in personal computing and
entertainment,
the company continues to position itself as a solution for
businesses. Sony
has been
responsible for securing business data for many
years. Sony has
had a strong footing in data archiving and business class
data storage
products. In 2008, Sony offers Advanced Intelligent
Tape Drives
(AIT5) for data backup. AIT-5 can back up to
400GB of data
natively.

Lenovo's home
page message tells
web visitors to "Escape from the
office this
summer" through a large home page banner.
The
background image shows a couple walking barefoot on a white
sand
tropical beach. The image does incorporate a close up
of a
Thinkpad notebook. Lenovo seems to be touching on
an
increasingly common scenario. More and more people
are taking
mobile computing products on vacations. This notion
is somewhat
confirmed by the initial suggestion on the click through
page. The
suggestion recommends Windows Vista Business before Windows
Vista Home
Premium to go with your Thinkpad notebook.

Currently Lenovo is featuring 11 notebook hard
drives. This line
also includes a drive born out of a newer technology is
known as a Solid
State Drive (SSD). Solid State Drives do not
have moving parts, consume
less energy, and can withstand harsher conditions and
